Where Do I Begin?

Are you looking to purchase your first home but aren't sure where to begin? The following information will get you started.

1. Attend a Homebuyer Education Class: RIHousing offers free in-person classes several times per month. Classes are also offered online for a fee of $50. Available in English and Spanish, classes review the homebuying process, available loan products, and give you the tools to create an affordable budget. 2. Work with a Mortgage Originator: Most first-time buyers need to finance their home purchase, and finding out how much you can afford is a crucial step in the homebuying process. Submit a pre-approval application with RIHousing online. The application will require proof of your income and assets. Once submitted, one of our Mortgage Originators will contact you to discuss your application.

3. Work with a Real Estate Agent: Once you have been pre-approved, you should find a realtor who can help you find available homes that are within your budget and meet your needs. We recommend you work with a certified real estate professional.

4. Find a Home: Working with your Realtor and Mortgage Originator, find your dream home and make an offer. Once your offer has been accepted, contact your Mortgage Originator to begin your application for financing.
